Migrant cuisines & Australian Food Multiculturalism Lecture by Dr Lara Anderson
For many, Australian cuisine is the sum of the country’s migrant cusines. This lecture will consider the transformation of the post-WW2 foodscape in Melbourne thanks to the influx of migrants from Europe. Melbourne’s foodscape became what it is today thanks to these gastronomic pioneers. We will also consider how Australia’s adoption of migrant food and cuisines is frequently celebrated as evidence of cultural openness. However, scholarship on “food multiculturalism” indicates that we must be more reflective about how food is used to promote multicultural values.
